SU VC inaugurates waste segregation point; SSWMB formally launches campus-wide cleanliness drive after inauguration

Sindh University Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr Fateh Muhammad Marri on Monday inaugurated the Waste Segregation Point (WSP) on the university campus—a designated facility for collecting and temporarily storing garbage brought in from different parts of the campus.

Following the availability of the waste collection facility, the relevant staff of the Sindh Solid Waste Management Board (SSWMB) immediately started sanitation and cleanliness work across various roads and areas of the campus.

The staff collected garbage and transported it using loaders to the newly allocated Waste Segregation Point.

The inaugural ceremony was held at the Waste Segregation Point located behind the Pakistan Post Office near the HBL Branch on the University of Sindh campus. Pro Vice-Chancellor Main Campus Professor Dr Abdul Sattar Shah, Registrar Sajid Qayoom Memon, Deans, Directors, Chairpersons, faculty members, officers and employees attended the ceremony.

Addressing the event, Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr Fateh Muhammad Marri said that an important first practical step had been taken towards making the University of Sindh a clean, green and environmentally responsible institution.

He said that after garbage was collected at a single point, it would be shifted to the dumping site, which would help protect the environment and improve public health.

He further said that universities must set practical examples in promoting environmental sustainability and responsible civic behavior.

He emphasized that collaboration between the University of Sindh and the Sindh Solid Waste Management Board had led to the introduction of a modern and scientific waste management system on the campus.

Dr Marri said that a clean academic environment would positively affect students’ learning, teachers’ performance and the overall image of the institution.

He added that the university administration was fully committed to improving cleanliness, sanitation and environmental standards on the campus.

Appreciating the role of the Sindh Solid Waste Management Board, he said that the provision of professional services to the university by the Board was commendable and expressed hope that this partnership would yield long-term benefits.

The Vice-Chancellor said that awareness among students, teachers, officers and employees regarding proper disposal of waste was equally important and would be initiated soon.

He added that cleanliness was not only the responsibility of any institution or authority but a collective responsibility of every member of society.

He urged students and employees to fully cooperate with the staff of the Sindh Solid Waste Management Board and ensure proper disposal of garbage.

He said that the university intended to adopt eco-friendly practices and reduce environmental pollution through sustainable solutions.

He said that these efforts were in line with national and international environmental protection goals, adding that all waste generated by the university would be collected and stored at the Waste Segregation Point, after which the dumping process would begin.

He added that the University of Sindh would continue to work on development-oriented and environment-friendly projects for the welfare of students and the community.

He also thanked the Government of Sindh for extending the services of the Sindh Solid Waste Management Board from towns and cities to educational institutions.

Meanwhile, the staff of the Sindh Solid Waste Management Board continued the cleanliness drive on the campus by collecting garbage from different areas and transporting it to the Waste Segregation Point.
