SU’s Institute of Biochemistry organizes diabetes awareness program in connection with World Diabetes Day

The Institute of Biochemistry, University of Sindh organized a comprehensive awareness program in connection with World Diabetes Day to highlight the growing menace of diabetes and educate the community on its control and prevention. 

The program featured a range of activities, including lectures, live counseling and physical diagnosis of pre-diabetes through sugar tests and physical measurements.

Consultant Dermatologist and CEO as well as Founder of Diabetes Telecare Dr Sania Bashir along with the Consultant Diabetologist at the Asian Institute of Medical Science Dr. Jaweria Salman conducted the diagnostic sessions.

A Nutritionist, CEO of the Hyderabad Nutrition Society and an alumnus of the University of Sindh Khadija Syed delivered an insightful lecture and conducted a live counseling session on the importance of balanced nutrition in managing diabetes. 

Director of the Institute of Biochemistry Prof. Dr. Afsheen Shah and Dr. Atuf Mangi emphasized the alarming rise in diabetes cases and discussed effective measures for its prevention and management. The session was presided over by the Dean Faculty of Natural Sciences Prof. Dr. Agha Asad Noor representing the Vice-Chancellor Professor (Meritorious) Dr Muhammad Siddique Kalhoro. 

In her welcoming remarks, Prof. Dr. Afsheen Shah thanked the guests and faculty members including Prof. Dr. Rafique Lashari, Prof. Dr. Khalid Lashari, Dr. Sheraz, Dr. Faiz Brohi, Dr Muhammad Younis Leghari, Dr. Yousaf Soomro, Dr. Jamshed Warsi and Dr Waqas Jamil.

Among others, Dean of the Faculty of Natural Sciences others Prof Dr Agha Noor Pathan, Prof. Dr Naseem Aslam Channa, Prof. Dr. Ibtissam Tahir, Dr. Mehwish Channa, Dr. Beenish Khanzada, Dr. Najaf Soomro and Asghar Khaskeli. 

The event attracted more than 300 participants, including students from various departments, parents and siblings of visitors.

A highlight of the program was the presence of retired veteran director Prof. Allah Nawaz, who announced a donation of an audio system worth Rs. 1 to 2 hundred thousand for the Institute of Biochemistry’s auditorium. 

Following the educational sessions, attendees participated in a group photo session and enjoyed light refreshments. The initiative is expected to leave a lasting impact by raising awareness about diabetes and encouraging proactive measures to control the disease.
