SU takes out rally against suspension of Indus Water Treaty, VC terms Indian move ‘barbaric’

A massive protest rally was taken out at the University of Sindh, Jamshoro on Thursday under the leadership of Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. Khalil-ur-Rehman Khoumbati against India's unilateral suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty with Pakistan.

The rally, which began from the Syed Ghulam Mustafa Shah Administration Block, marched past key university offices including the Registrar Office, Planning & Development and Controller’s Office before culminating at the main entrance of the AC-II building. Carrying banners and placards, the rally participants chanted powerful slogans against the Modi-led Indian government, branding it as “a government of barbarism” and asserting their unyielding stance on Pakistan’s water rights.

The protestors also raised slogans in support of the Pakistan Army and pledged their unwavering support to the armed forces, stating that the entire nation stood united behind the military in every situation.

Addressing the rally, Vice-Chancellor Dr. Khalil-ur-Rehman Khoumbati condemned India’s recent announcement to place the 1960 Indus Waters Treaty in abeyance, terming it “an act of aggression and hostility.”

“India’s attempt to deprive Pakistan of its legitimate share of water is not only a violation of international agreements but also an attack on Pakistan’s sovereignty”. He said.

He said that the Indus Waters Treaty was a binding international accord and India’s decision to suspend it was a blatant breach of trust.

He said that Pakistan’s agriculture, economy and lives were directly dependent on these waters – any attempt to disrupt this balance will have dire consequences.

“We strongly condemn India’s hegemonic designs over river waters flowing into Pakistan”, he said and added that it was not just a political issue; but it was a humanitarian issue that affected millions of Pakistani citizens.

“Water is life and we will never allow anyone to play with the lives of our people”, the VC said and asked the international community to take serious notice of India’s irresponsible behavior.

“We stand united with our brave Pakistan Army, which is fully capable of defending our territorial and water rights", he said and said that the move was an effort to destabilize Pakistan, but our resilience will turn it into a failure.

The rally was attended by Pro-Vice Chancellor (Main Campus) Professor Dr. Abdul Sattar Shah, Pro-Vice Chancellor (SU Campus Thatta) Professor Dr. Misbah Bibi Qureshi, Registrar Professor Dr. Mushtaque Ali Jariko, faculty members, administrative officers and a large number of students and staff.

The participants dispersed peacefully after registering their strong protest, vowing to remain alert and resist any move that harms Pakistan’s water rights.
