SU marks World Malaria Day amid organizing awareness seminar

The Department of Physiology, Medical Laboratory Technology (MLT), Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) and Public Health of the University of Sindh, Jamshoro in collaboration with Hope Felt Foundation, Global Fund Malaria Project Team-NRSP and the District Health Office Vector Borne Diseases (VBD) Team organized a vibrant event to mark World Malaria Day 2025 under the theme “Malaria Ends With Us: Reinvest, Reimagine, Reignite.”

The event commenced with an awareness seminar on malaria prevention, control, and treatment, held at the university's Department of Physiology and allied disciplines. The seminar aimed to educate students, faculty and the wider community on accessible and practical ways to combat malaria.

Dean, Faculty of Natural Sciences Professor Dr. Nek Muhammad Shaikh presided over the session. In his address, he emphasized the importance of utilizing locally available resources and community-level awareness to prevent the spread of malaria.

District Health Officer (DHO) Jamshoro Dr. Pir Manzoor Ahmed Chandio who attended the event as the Chief Guest shared insights on the efforts of the District Health Office in providing essential anti-malarial medicines and establishing testing facilities across the district. He also highlighted ongoing community health initiatives aimed at vector control.

Provincial Project Manager, VBD Sindh Dr Ghulam Sarwar Soomro elaborated on the methodologies employed by the VBD department for diagnosis, medication, and treatment of malaria. He also stressed the importance of public-private partnerships in malaria eradication efforts.

Faculty member Farzana Naz Baloch played a key role in organizing the event and welcomed all guests and participants. She emphasized the significance of integrating academic learning with public health awareness to tackle issues like malaria at the grassroots level.

She highlighted the department’s ongoing commitment to community health through seminars, workshops, and student engagement programs.

Chairman Department of Physiology Professor Dr. Zulfiqar Ali Laghari, appreciated the collaboration with external partners like the Global Fund Malaria Project, NRSP and the District Health Office, stating that such partnerships are essential to drive impactful health outcomes in underserved regions.

Provincial Project Manager, Global Fund Malaria Project Ram Kirshan, District Focal Person, VBD-Malaria, Jamshoro Dr. Raheela Talpur, District Malaria Superintendent, VBD-Jamshoro Fida Hussain Shah and District Coordinator, NRSP, Global Fund Malaria Project Ghulam Shabbir Bozdar echoed the message that malaria can be effectively controlled through affordable and preventive measures, community participation, and sustained awareness campaigns.

The event witnessed active participation of around 300 students, faculty members, and staff, who pledged to play their part in malaria prevention and community health improvement.
