Literature cultivates empathy, values; these qualities essential for personal and societal progress, says Dr Mohammad Khan Sangi

The Department of English Language and Literature, Elsa Kazi Campus, University of Sindh, Hyderabad hosted the inaugural ceremony of the Society for English Language and Literature Aspirants (SELLA), which was held at the Auditorium of the National Incubation Centre (NIC) Hyderabad.

The event was marked by engaging lectures, intellectual discourse and a strong turnout of enthusiastic students and faculty members.

The ceremony began with the recitation of the Holy Qur’an, followed by Naat.

Coordinator of SELLA Summaya Sattar introduced the society’s vision, highlighting its commitment to fostering critical thinking, creativity and artistic expression among students.

She emphasized SELLA’s mission to bridge the gap between Elsa Kazi Campus and the university's main campus, offering students a supportive and inclusive academic community.

One of the highlights of the event was the keynote lecture by Dean of the Faculty of Arts Prof. Dr. Mohammad Khan Sangi.

In his talk titled “Why Study Literature?”, Dr. Sangi explored the profound role of literature in developing emotional intelligence, imagination and intellectual depth.

Using real-life student experiences, he illustrated how literature contributes to personal growth, ethical understanding and academic success.

His interactive and relatable style kept the audience engaged, and students responded with enthusiasm.

Many attendees remarked that the lecture deepened their interest in literature and inspired them to pursue literary studies with renewed passion—an outcome closely aligned with SELLA’s goals.

Following this, Ujala from NIC Hyderabad presented an insightful session on startups and entrepreneurship.

Her dynamic talk introduced students to the entrepreneurial mindset and offered practical guidance on transforming creative ideas into impactful business ventures.

Her presentation was well-received and sparked lively discussions among aspiring student entrepreneurs.

The success of the ceremony owed much to the leadership and vision of Chairman of the Department of English Language and Literature Prof. Dr. Abdul Hameed Panhwar.

In his vote of thanks, Dr. Panhwar expressed his gratitude to the speakers and participants.

He reaffirmed the value of literature in shaping not only academic minds but also compassionate human beings.

“Literature,” he said, “cultivated empathy, kindness and values—qualities essential for personal and societal progress.”

Special recognition was given to Supervisor of Logistics for SELLA Noman Jatoi for his exceptional management and behind-the-scenes coordination, which contributed to the smooth execution of the event.

His dedication set a high benchmark for future SELLA activities.

The society also extended appreciation to Dr. Abdul Sattar Gopang and Dr. Zubair Chachar from the Faculty of Education and Dr. Sheeraz Illyas Shaikh, Principal of Dr Nabi Bux Khan Model School Hyderabad for their presence.

The inaugural ceremony of SELLA concluded on a high note, leaving students inspired and eager to contribute to the literary and academic culture promoted by the society. The success of this event marks a promising beginning for SELLA as a platform dedicated to enriching the educational experiences of English language and literature students at the University of Sindh.
