Speakers highlight risks, choices, legal pathways of migration to Canada

A seminar titled “Migration: Risks, Choices and Regular Pathways” was held on Monday at the Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto Convention Centre, University of Sindh, Jamshoro in collaboration with the Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada, IOM-UN Migration, Change Consulting Pvt Ltd, MDF and the Department of Sociology, University of Sindh.

The event aimed to raise awareness about migration as a personal choice, highlighting its potential risks, consequences and the importance of choosing safe and legal migration pathways.

Addressing the participants, Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. Fateh Muhammad Marri said that awareness of legal migration frameworks and protections was vital in the current global context.

He said, “Students and youth must understand both the risks and opportunities associated with migration. Regular pathways ensure safety, dignity and better integration prospects.”

Dr. Ishrat Ali said that migration should be viewed through both economic and social lenses. “Illegal migration not only risks human lives but also undermines social stability," she said.

She added that educating youth about safe and informed migration decisions was the need of the hour.

Meanwhile, representatives from IOM and Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada shared insights on the latest global migration trends, legal protections and available support mechanisms for prospective migrants.

They highlighted that nearly 48% of illegal migrants traveled by sea and 52% overland often facing exploitation, detention or deportation.

The seminar’s key objectives included building awareness on migration risks, promoting regular migration channels through education, skills and employment and providing accessible resources for migrants seeking legal pathways.

The session concluded with an interactive discussion, where participants emphasized collective efforts between academia, government and international organizations to promote safe, informed and sustainable migration practices.
