SU's anthropology students showcase Sindhi music heritage through poster art exhibition
The Department of Anthropology and Archaeology, University of Sindh, organized a compelling Poster Art Exhibition on Sindhi Music Heritage, curated by third-year students under the supervision of Dr. Rafique Wassan.
Dr. Wassan explained that the exhibition, inspired by creative anthropological methods, featured archival photographs of Sindhi music albums originally published in Daily Kawish, a major cultural force in the 1990s.
The display was part of a semester-long research project in which students explored Sindh’s musical traditions through online archives, studying artists, production houses and changing aesthetics.
A large number of students and faculty attended, appreciating the visual storytelling and innovative curation that revived the region’s musical past.
Chairman of the department Dr. Abdul Razaque Channa inaugurated the event. He praised the students’ efforts and described the exhibition as a meaningful blend of creativity and research.
He highlighted that Sindh’s cassette music era captured its social history, linguistic diversity and emotional landscape with contributions from icons such as Jalal Chandio, Ustad Yousaf, Mai Bhagi, Shaman Mirali, Sarmad Sindhi, Ustad Manzoor Sakhirani Fouzia Soomro and others.
Dr. Muhbat Ali Shah moderated the event, while Ms. Zahida Rehman and Ms. Quratulain lauded the value of hands-on learning and creative inquiry.
Student researchers also shared their interpretations of the showcased archives.
