Rethinking student success: SU VC urges focus on skills, adaptability; says education must build character, not just careers

A thought-provoking lecture on redefining student success was held at the Elsa Kazi Campus of the University of Sindh on Monday, bringing together a large audience of students and faculty eager to explore new dimensions of learning and personal development.

Organized by the Society of English Language and Literature Aspirants (SELLA) in collaboration with the Department of English Language and Literature, Elsa Kazi Campus, the session, titled “Rethinking Student Success: Preparing Students for Learning and Life (For Students)”, featured Prof Dr Fateh Muhammad Marri as the keynote speaker.

Held at the NIC Auditorium of the Faculty of Education, the event began at 10am and was attended by prominent academicians, including Prof Dr Muhammad Khan Sangi, Prof Dr Abdul Hameed Panhwar, Dr Abida Siddiqui, Dr Hamida Narejo, and Dr Abdul Sattar Gopang, among others.

In his address, Dr Marri challenged conventional notions of academic success, arguing that grades alone were no longer sufficient in defining a student’s achievement. He emphasized the need for a broader, more holistic approach that nurtures critical thinking, practical skills and a strong sense of social responsibility.

“Students must prepare not just for examinations, but for life,” he said, highlighting the importance of adaptability, creativity and problem-solving in an increasingly complex and fast-changing world.

He also underscored the value of lifelong learning and urged students to remain curious and self-driven beyond the classroom.

Education, he noted, should enable individuals to actively contribute to society rather than passively absorb information.

Encouraging students to take ownership of their academic journeys, the vice chancellor advised them to engage in co-curricular activities, participate in meaningful dialogue and seek opportunities that foster both intellectual and personal growth. He concluded by stressing that true success lies in applying knowledge effectively, upholding ethical values and making a positive societal impact.

Earlier, Dr Abdul Hameed Panhwar welcomed the guest speaker and described the lecture as timely and relevant in addressing contemporary educational challenges. He said that rethinking student success was essential to preparing students for future academic and professional demands.

At the end of the session, Dr Muhammad Khan Sangi delivered the vote of thanks, appreciating the speaker’s insights and the organisers’ efforts.
