The Department of Political Science, University of Sindh, Jamshoro, observed the International Day of Democracy 2026 with an academic and cultural programme aimed at promoting democratic values, human rights, constitutionalism, inclusive governance, and responsible citizenship.
The event was held under the theme “Bring Human Rights Into Focus” and was presided over by Prof. Dr. Nanik Ram, Dean, Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Sindh. Ms. Bakhtawar Talpur, Lecturer, Department of Political Science, hosted and moderated the session.
The programme began with the recitation of the Holy Qur’an by Dr. Ghulam Murtaza Soomro, followed by a soulful presentation of the Vai and verses of Shah Abdul Latif Bhittai by Assistant Professor Dr. Bisharat Lanjwani. The performance added a significant cultural dimension to the programme, connecting the democratic ideals of peace, human dignity, tolerance, and coexistence with the universal message found in the poetry of Shah Abdul Latif Bhittai. A Milli Naghma was presented by Mr. Amjad Lashari, a BS II student in the Department of Political Science, further enriching the programme.
A distinguished panel of academics addressed different dimensions of democracy.
Prof. Dr. Muhammad Akram Gilal, Department of Economics, University of Sindh, Jamshoro, spoke on “Democracy and Economic Development.” He discussed the relationship between democracy, economic growth, and economic development, drawing attention to comparative political and economic experiences of different countries. His talk highlighted the importance of strong democratic institutions, sound governance, and political stability in creating an environment conducive to sustainable economic progress.
Prof. Dr. Shuja Ahmed Mahesar, Director, Pakistan Study Center, University of Sindh speaking on “Pakistan’s Democratic Vision – Perspective and Direction,” reflected upon the evolution of democracy in Pakistan, its continuing challenges, and the direction required for strengthening democratic governance. He emphasized that democracy must go beyond periodic elections and should be supported by effective institutions, political participation, accountability, and a democratic political culture.
Prof. Dr. Ghulam Akbar Mahesar addressed “Democracy and Human Rights,” emphasizing the close relationship between democratic governance and the protection of fundamental rights. His discussion highlighted human dignity, equality, freedom, participation, constitutionalism, accountable governance, and the rule of law as essential foundations of a substantive democratic system. Dr. Mahesar underscored that democracy should not be understood merely as a political form or an electoral process. Rather, a meaningful democracy requires constitutional supremacy, the rule of law, institutional accountability, protection of human rights, socioeconomic development, inclusion, tolerance, and active citizen participation, particularly among young people.
Giving his presidential observations, Prof. Dr. Nanik Ram, Dean, Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Sindh, Jamshoro, appreciated the academic dialogue and stressed the important role of universities and social sciences. In particular, he said that such dialogues can play a role in developing informed, responsible, and critically engaged citizens. His presence and guidance added significance to the observance of the International Day of Democracy.
The concluding remarks were delivered by Prof. Dr. Abdul Razak, Chairman, Department of Anthropology and Archaeology, who appreciated the Department of Political Science for bringing scholars and students together to reflect critically on democracy. He emphasized the importance of continuing such academic conversations within universities and encouraging young people to understand democratic values, cultural diversity, human rights, and responsible citizenship.
The event concluded with a shared understanding that democracy is strengthened not only through institutions and elections but also through a culture of dialogue, tolerance, accountability, equality, and respect for human dignity. The programme successfully combined academic discussion with Sindh’s rich cultural tradition and conveyed a strong message that universities have an important responsibility to nurture democratic consciousness among future generations.
