University of Sindh Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Fateh Muhammad Marri (TI) has said that climate change has caused a significant rise in temperatures, with the situation worsening every year. Densely populated urban areas, desert areas and rocky regions are being severely affected by the situation. Not only us, but the entire world is facing the dangerous effects of climate change.
He said rising temperatures and environmental pollution were having highly harmful effects on human life as well as all other living organisms. The simple and inexpensive solution to the problem was to plant as many trees as possible. If every person planted just one sapling a month, the number of saplings planted in a year could reach billions.
He expressed these views while addressing a tree plantation ceremony at the University of Sindh as the chief guest, organised with the joint support of the SU Plantation Section and social organisations Lions International and Breathe Green Hyderabad.
Dr Marri further said a green University of Sindh was among his priorities. In pursuit of this objective, new flowering and fruit-bearing saplings had been planted through a series of tree plantation activities since last month, with support also being sought from various institutions and social organisations.
The vice chancellor said more than 3,000 saplings had so far been planted, while the target for the ongoing phase was to plant 10,000 saplings, which, he said, would certainly be achieved through collective efforts.
On the occasion, the vice chancellor planted saplings along with pro vice chancellors, heads of various departments, faculty members , students and teams of supporting social organisations. He stressed the need to pay special attention to their protection and growth.
Dr Marri thanked Lions International and Breathe Green Hyderabad for their cooperation and expressed hope that the collaboration would continue in the future.
During the plantation ceremony, 200 saplings were planted along both sides of the road from the University of Sindh International Hostel to Habib Bank.
Speaking on the occasion, Breathe Green Hyderabad head Noor Ali Rowjani, Lions International President Asif Memon and Secretary Abdul Qadir also shared their views. They thanked the vice chancellor for his support and said planting as many saplings as possible at the University of Sindh was part of their efforts and that more saplings would be planted soon.
Mr Rowjani said the University of Sindh was his alma mater and that he had studied at its Department of Geology. He said he had always found satisfaction in serving the university.
The ceremony was attended by University of Sindh Thatta Campus Pro Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Misbah Bibi Qureshi, Dadu Campus Pro Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Anila Naz Soomro, Controller of Semester Examinations Muhammad Mashooque Siddiqui, Chairman of the University of Sindh Residential Colony Dr Mazhar Ali Abbasi, Provost of Boys Hostels Dr Panhal Khan Lashari, Adviser Students Affairs Dr Muhammad Younis Laghari, Plantation Officer Munawar Rajar, heads of various departments and teachers, including Dr Rafique Ahmed Lashari, Dr Zulfiqar Ali Laghari, Dr Imran Ali Halepoto, Dr Shahid Hussain Larik and Dr Sujo Hemani, as well as Habib Bank Jamshoro Consultant Ghulam Shabbir Narejo. A large number of students also participated in the plantation ceremony and planted saplings.
