Sindh Culture Day celebrated at SU with great zeal, enthusiasm

The University of Sindh, Jamshoro on Thursday came alive with vibrant celebrations of Sindh Culture Day marked with great zeal and enthusiasm by students and teachers across all departments. Separate programs were organized within the respective departments, showcasing the rich traditions and cultural heritage of Sindh through various activities. 

The Vice-Chancellor, Professor (Emeritus) Dr. Muhammad Siddique Kalhoro actively participated in the celebrations. Accompanied by Registrar Professor Dr. Mushtaque Ali Jariko, Deputy Registrar Nadeem Butt and other officials visited the Institute of Physics, Faculty of Engineering & Technology and the Institute of Business Administration (IBA). He enjoyed the students' poetry recitations and singing competitions, appreciating their efforts in bringing Sindhi culture to life.

Addressing the participants, he emphasized the importance of preserving Sindh’s language, culture, and identity. “Our culture defines who we are and it is our duty to protect and promote it. Such events strengthen our connection to our roots,” he stated. 

He said that Sindh Culture Day was not just an annual celebration; it was a reminder of the deep-rooted heritage and identity, adding that Sindhi language, traditions and cultural values were treasures that defined who Sindhis were as a people.

“It is our collective responsibility to preserve and promote them for future generations”, Dr Kalhoro said and added that the Universities were not only centers of learning but also custodians of cultural heritage. “Events like these connect us to our roots and instill a sense of pride in our identity”, he said.

Encouraging the students, he said that their participation in such events demonstrated their love for Sindh, Pakistan and its glorious culture. “I urge you to continue celebrating and safeguarding our traditions in every sphere of life”, he said.

The Vice-Chancellor said that education was the cornerstone of progress and providing scholarships was one of the most impactful ways to empower the students and enable their academic journey.

He highlighted the university's commitment to supporting deserving and talented students and stated that within his tenure of four years as Vice-Chancellor, he had distributed scholarships amounting to Rs850 million.

“This unprecedented initiative has transformed the lives of countless students, helping them achieve their dreams,” he said and added that he will continue to strive for more opportunities to support SU students, ensuring that no deserving individual was deprived of quality education due to financial constraints.

“The University of Sindh is a microcosm of Pakistan's diversity, where students from various ethnic and cultural backgrounds come together to learn and grow. Through this Sindh cultural event every year, we aim to celebrate the rich tapestry of our nation's cultures while fostering a sense of unity and shared identity among our students”, Dr Kalhoro said. 

He added that on the cultural day, SU always highlighted the traditions, languages and values of different communities. “We are not only promoting cultural awareness but also strengthening the bonds that unite us as Pakistanis. Such events are a testament to the harmony and solidarity we strive to uphold in our institution”, he said. 

Focal person SU Campus Dadu Dr. Nek Muhammad Shaikh, Dean Faculty of Engineering & Technology Professor Dr. Lachhman Das Dhomeja, Dr. Arifa Bhutto, Dr Imamuddin Khoso and many others were present during the VC’s visit in their respective departments.

On the other hand, the Department of International Relations also organized its cultural event with the theme “Cultural Reflections of Pakistan” with full participation from teachers and students.

The special guests of the program included Dean Faculty of Social Sciences Professor Dr Hamadullah Kakepoto, Director Students’ Affairs Dr. Muhammad Younis Leghari, Director of Campus Security Dr. Ghulam Saqib Burro and SU’s Spokesman Dr. Nadir Ali Mugheri. 

On this occasion, the Chairperson of the Department of IR Professor Dr. Ishrat Abbasi addressed the audience and stated that students from nearly all the ethnicities and communities in Pakistan, including Sindhi, Punjabi, Baloch, Pashtun, Hindu and Muslim were studying in her department; therefore, through this program, she said the department had aimed to present a blended reflection of Pakistani cultures. The objective was to showcase unity and solidarity with our country. 

The event featured student performances, including speeches, poetry recitations, dance tableaux and stalls showcasing various games, adding to the vibrancy of the occasion.
