The University of Sindh Jamshoro came alive with the spirit of poetry, philosophy and peace as it celebrated ‘Latif Day’ to honor the timeless legacy of Sindh’s great poet, thinker and messenger of humanity hazrat Shah Abdul Latif Bhittai (RA).

The event organized under the supervision of the Bureau of Students’ Tutorial Guidance & Counseling Services (STAGS) featured speech competitions in Sindhi, Urdu and English. More than 30 students participated in the competitions presenting Bhittai’s philosophy in contemporary contexts — linking his message to peace, human rights and freedom. Winners were awarded prizes and certificates at the closing ceremony.

Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. Khalil-ur-Rehman Khoumbati in his keynote address described Shah Latif’s verses as “not merely poetry but an eternal manifesto for the entire human universe. “Latif’s thought teaches us love for our land, brotherhood among people and peace for the whole world”, he said and added that his melodies were the identity of Sindh, guiding youth in every age.

“We are proud that such an immortal poet is the spiritual heir of our land,” he said.

Dr. Khoumbati said that Shah Latif’s poetry held “pearls of wisdom” that enriched not only Sindhi literature but also the world’s intellectual heritage.

He urged students to practice Latif’s philosophy in their lives, calling it “the true guarantee of a brighter future.”

Director Bureau of STAGS Dr. Shabana Tunio in her welcome address said Bhittai’s message was a profound source for students to understand truth, beauty and the essence of life.

Judges, including Dr. Abida Huma, Dr. Anna Shaikh, Dr. Ghulam Ali Buriro and Dr. Allah Bakhsh Gopang praised the students’ bold ideas and eloquence.

Delivering the vote of thanks, Dr. Mubarak Ali Lashari remarked that in order to remember Latif was to keep the spirit of Sindh alive. Even centuries later, his verses continued to inspire generations with hope, courage and love.

Participants described the event not just as a commemoration but as an intellectual movement — one that rekindled Shah Latif’s message of peace and unity in the hearts of youth.

The University of Sindh’s campus once again echoed with his eternal melodies, reminding all that Bhittai’s philosophy remains as relevant today as ever.
