History’s teacher earned PhD from Chinese Shanghai University calls on SU Vice-Chancellor, receives accolade, felicitations

An Assistant Professor of the Department of History, University of Sindh, Jamshoro Dr. Bashir Ahmed Jatoi called on Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. Fateh Muhammad Marri here on Wednesday after successfully completing his PhD in World History (Global Studies) from Shanghai University, China, with a specialization in urban environmental history.

During the meeting, Dr. Jatoi briefed the Vice-Chancellor about his doctoral research titled “Empire and Environment: The British Raj and Urbanization in Karachi, 1847–1947.”

He said his research examined how colonial governance, environmental transformations and patterns of urban expansion intertwined to shape the socio-ecological landscape of Karachi under British rule.

He added that his study shed light on the environmental consequences of colonial urban planning—particularly on sanitation, water management and spatial segregation—and how these policies continue to influence Karachi’s modern urban challenges.

He said that understanding the colonial roots of urban development was vital to formulating sustainable and inclusive urban policies for present-day Pakistan.

Vice-Chancellor Dr. Fateh Muhammad Marri congratulated Dr. Jatoi on the timely completion of his PhD and commended his efforts in pursuing a unique and globally relevant topic.

He said that Dr. Jatoi’s work not only added a new dimension to the academic understanding of Karachi’s history but also enriched the field of global and environmental studies in Pakistan.

“The University of Sindh takes pride in its young scholars who are contributing to international academic discourse through rigorous research and global exposure”, he said.

He encouraged Dr. Jatoi to continue his research and share his findings with students and policymakers to promote informed approaches toward sustainable urban development.

It may be noted that before pursuing his doctoral studies in China, Dr. Bashir Ahmed Jatoi earned his Master’s degree in History from Quaid-i-Azam University, Islamabad, where he developed a keen interest in South Asian urban and environmental history.

On this occasion, the Chairman Department of History, Dr. Irfan Ahmed Shaikh was also present.
