Sindh University, SSWMB join hands to resolve long-standing garbage issue on campus, residential colony

In a significant step towards ensuring a cleaner and greener environment, the University of Sindh, Jamshoro and the Sindh Solid Waste Management Board (SSWMB) have signed a landmark agreement for garbage collection and waste management across the university campus and its residential colony premises, where the solid waste problem had reached alarming proportions.

The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was formally signed between the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Sindh Professor Dr. Fateh Muhammad Marri and Managing Director of the Sindh Solid Waste Management Board Tarique Nizamani at a ceremony held at the Vice-Chancellor’s Secretariat followed by cutting a ribbon. Senior university officials, faculty members and representatives of the SSWMB attended the event.

Under the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), the SSWMB will collect and dispose of solid waste from both the academic and residential zones of the University of Sindh. The Board will lift garbage from designated points on the campus and on a house-to-house basis in the colony, completely free of cost. Additionally, garbage containers and trash bins will be strategically placed at various spots to facilitate proper waste disposal.

Speaking to journalists on the occasion, Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. Fateh Muhammad Marri said that the Sindh University administration was deeply concerned about the growing waste problem on campus, which not only affected the beauty of the Alma Mater but also posed health risks to students, teachers and residents.

“This partnership with the Sindh Solid Waste Management Board marks a new beginning for our campus. We are determined to make the University of Sindh one of the cleanest and most environmentally friendly universities in the country”, he said and added that a clean campus reflected the discipline, culture and civic sense of its community.

He added that the initiative was part of the university’s broader environmental policy, which also included tree plantation drives, wastewater management and the promotion of eco-friendly practices among students and staff.

PPP lawmaker Dr. Sikander Ali Shoro lauded the efforts of both institutions and said that the board proved that it was an efficient organization, which was spreading its network rapidly to make Sindh a clean province.

He said after the assurance granted by the PPP chairperson Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, the government of Sindh will soon provide transport facilities to the students of the University of Sindh.

“Sindh University is the last hope for the students belonging to every nook and corner of the province, our government will help it progress and develop”, he said.

Dr Shoro said “Sindh University is not just an educational institution but it is a symbol of Sindh’s intellectual and cultural identity”. “Keeping it clean is a collective responsibility,” he stated.

“Under the vision of the Sindh government, led by the Pakistan People’s Party, we are committed to extending solid waste management services to every district and institution of Sindh. This MoU is a step toward that vision,” he said and added that the initiative would also help in promoting environmental awareness among the youth.

Managing Director SSWMB Tarique Nizamani expressed his pleasure at partnering with one of the oldest and most prestigious universities of Pakistan and said that board was proud to extend its operations to the University of Sindh.

“The SSWMB has developed a comprehensive plan for waste collection, segregation and disposal in the Jamshoro region. We will deploy trained staff, garbage vehicles and modern equipment to ensure effective waste management,” he said.

Dr Khalil ur Reman Khoumbati emphasized the importance of public cooperation in maintaining cleanliness and urged the university community to dispose of waste responsibly.

“The presence of solid waste on the campus and in residential areas had long been a serious concern. With the involvement of SSWMB, we are hopeful that the problem will now be resolved in a sustainable and systematic manner,” he stated.

He added that the university administration would fully cooperate with the SSWMB teams and monitor the progress to ensure consistent implementation of the agreement.

Registrar Professor Dr. Mushtaque Ali Jariko also shared his views on the occasion, saying that the initiative would greatly improve the living and learning environment at the University of Sindh.

He assured full cooperation and said that the initiatives of SSWMB were commendable. He said that it was the responsibility of all to keep the university clean and provide a pollution-free environment to the students.

The initiative will also help in improving the infrastructure and will cooperate with the Solid Waste Management Authority for the beautification and cleanliness of the university premises.

With the launch of this initiative, both the university and the SSWMB aim to eliminate such practices and promote a culture of cleanliness and environmental responsibility across the campus community.

The agreement marks a milestone in the University of Sindh’s efforts to modernize its infrastructure and improve the quality of life for its faculty, students, and residents.
