Inauguration of Miyawaki Forest and Herbal Corner at IPS Botanical Garden, University of Sindh, Jamshoro

The Institute of Plant Sciences (IPS), University of Sindh, Jamshoro, organized a vibrant inauguration ceremony of the Miyawaki Forest and Hibiscus–Lemongrass Herbal Corner today (Tuesday, 4th November 2025) under its IPS Green Drive initiative. The event marks a significant step towards promoting climate resilience, environmental awareness, and research-driven greening efforts on campus.

Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. Fateh Muhammad Marri inaugurated the event by planting a sapling and emphasized that a major portion of the 4-acre land allocated for the Botanical Garden has already been revived, while the remaining area will soon be developed into vibrant green zones for conservation, education, and community benefit. He reaffirmed the University’s commitment to green campus development and sustainability, referencing past projects such as the successful OGDCL-Miyawaki collaboration and current in-house efforts led by IPS.

Prof. Dr. Rabia Asma Memon, Director IPS, briefed the audience on the global concept of Green Universities, highlighting the academic, ecological, and aesthetic significance of such initiatives in the wake of climate change and environmental degradation. She noted that both plantation corners not only enhance biodiversity but also serve as living laboratories for students and researchers.

The Miyawaki Forest, launched earlier in March 2025 as a pilot phase, now houses over 580 native plants across 5,200 sq. ft., while the Herbal Corner, focused on Hibiscus and Lemongrass, features 250 plants over 2,200 sq. ft. These projects promote air purification, biodiversity conservation, and provide a model for eco-friendly, student-engaged campus transformation.

The event witnessed active participation from faculty members, Syndicate members, chairpersons and directors of various departments, SUTA representatives, and a large number of students. Notable attendees included:
 • Prof. Dr. Naheed Kaka, Dean, Faculty of Natural Sciences
 • Prof. Dr. Arfana Mallah, Director, Dr. M.A. Kazi Institute of Chemistry
 • Dr. Shahnawaz Marri, University of Tandojam
 • Prof. Dr. Altaf Simair, Chairman, Department of Botany, GC University Hyderabad

A collective plantation drive was also held, with attendees planting saplings as part of the green initiative.

Prof. Dr. Rabia appreciated the efforts of the organizing team comprising Dr. Hadi Bux Bozdar, Ms. Zubeda Lashari, Dr. Farooque Ali Bughio, Plantation Officer Mr. Munawar Rajar, and Dr. Ali Nawaz Siyal for their dedicated support in making the event a success.
